How a round robin works
How many games? With N teams there are N × (N − 1) ÷ 2, since each team meets every other team exactly once: 6 games for 4 teams, 15 for 6, 28 for 8, 66 for 12. An even number of teams plays N − 1 rounds; an odd number plays N rounds.
An odd count, like 5 or 7 teams, leaves one team without an opponent each round. That team has a bye, once in the whole tournament, and the generator shows it under the round: "Sitting out:" and its name. Every team ends with the same number of games.
The standings update with every score. By default a win is worth 2 points, a tie 1 and a loss 0; change these before you create the tournament if your league gives 3 points for a win. Teams tied on points are sorted by wins, then the differential, then goals or points scored, and finally in alphabetical order. The game between the two tied teams does not break the tie.
Round robin or elimination? A round robin gives everyone the same number of games, but it takes time: 8 teams play 28 games, against 7 in single elimination. To crown a champion after the round robin, enter your teams in standings order in the bracket maker, in elimination: the first becomes seed 1.
Frequently asked questions
How long does a round robin take?
Roughly the number of games times the game length, divided by the number of surfaces. For exact times, enter your surfaces, the game length and the first game time: the generator gives each game its start time; add one game length to the last one to know when it all ends.
Can a team play two games in a row?
Yes, it can happen. The generator puts each game in the first free slot after the last game of both its teams, with no break added. A team never plays two games at the same time.
Can I give 3 points for a win?
Yes. Before you create the tournament, change the values under "Standings points": win, tie and loss, 0 to 10 each. To change them later, tap "Edit the teams or the format"; making the bracket again clears the scores already entered.
How do the teams follow the standings?
Tap "Share link": the schedule, the scores and the standings travel in the link, which the teams open with no account, read only. The link shows the tournament as it was when shared; after more games, send a new link, or print the schedule for the gym wall.
